Referrals

At PINC & STEEL, we have a nationwide network of trained Oncology Physiotherapists ready to support your patients. Our simplified referral process ensures they’re connected quickly with the right care — making it easy for both healthcare professionals and patients to access the support they need.

When to Refer

PINC & STEEL cancer rehabilitation services support people with all cancer types, at any stage of their treatment or recovery.

You can refer a patient if they are experiencing any of the following — or other issues affecting their physical function, wellbeing, or quality of life:

Physical Concerns:

  • Fatigue, weakness, reduced mobility, muscle/joint pain
  • Stiffness, tingling in hands/feet, scar discomfort, swelling in limbs

Functional Challenges:

  • Difficulty exercising, managing treatment side effects
  • Balance issues, risk of falls, lymphoedema

Daily Life Impact:

  • Trouble resuming day-to-day tasks or activities they enjoy
  • Seeking personalised physical activity guidance

Other Issues:

  • Shortness of breath, bladder or bowel dysfunction, difficulty with self-care

How to Refer

Referring is easy:

  • Use our online referral portal
  • Include the main reason for referral or any specific concerns
  • Our Patient Navigator will connect the referral to the nearest certified provider

What Happens Next?

Every patient starts with an initial assessment – which is funded for patients without medical insurance by the PINC & STEEL Foundation.
During this session, an Oncology Physiotherapist will:

  • Assess the patient’s needs, goals, and treatment impact
  • Create a personalised self-management plan
  • Recommend the most appropriate rehabilitation pathway

If additional support is needed, the physio can apply for further funded sessions on the patient’s behalf. Our small group rehabilitation programmes are also fully funded.

Financial Assistance

Individual Sessions: May have a small surcharge (between $10–$20) depending on location
Group Programmes: Fully funded – both in person and online
Self-Funding Option: Helps ensure charitable support is directed to those who need it most

Service Locations

PINC & STEEL services are available nationwide — from Northland to Southland — through our network of certified Oncology Physiotherapists.

For patients in rural or remote areas, or those facing travel challenges, we also offer online sessions to ensure access to support no matter where they live.

Timing of Rehabilitation

Our services can support patients during or after treatment. Many benefit from starting rehab while still undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy or hormone therapy to manage:

  • Range of motion
  • Fatigue
  • Strength loss
  • Side effects
  • Post-treatment, we help patients restore function and return to life roles.

Specialised Support: Pelvic Health & Lymphoedema

Many of our certified PINC & STEEL physiotherapists have additional qualifications in pelvic health and lymphoedema management. If this support is requested in a referral, our Patient Navigator will ensure the patient is connected with the most appropriate physiotherapist in their region.

Group Programmes & Schedules

Schedules vary by provider and location. After referral, our Patient Navigator will guide the patient to local and/or online options that best suit their needs.
All group classes are fully funded.
